DAGUPAN CITY ‚Äď This early, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez in collaboration with the City Schools Division Office of the Department of Education (DepEd) has started looking for school children with exemplary skills in swimming in preparation for the 2015 Region 1 Athletic Association meet and for future national and international competitions.
Mayor Belen, herself, had personally checked the progress of the city’s pool of aspirant swimmers to see how far have they gone in their training in their individual time trial last January 13 at the city’s Olympic size swimming pool at the poolside.
¬†‚ÄúThose who will qualify with the standard will likely compose the Balon Dagupan swimming team who will assure us of getting medals for the city,‚ÄĚ disclosed Mayor Belen.
Developing local athletes with all the necessary support like trainings, to further enhance their performance, is part of Mayor Belen’s commitment and obsession of strengthening the city’s sports program.
¬†‚ÄúWe are giving special attention to the development of our athletes, who have been neglected in the past, because we want them to excel in their chosen field of sports and gain their self-confidence. Kapag nagkaroon na sila ng confidence sa sarili at magtiwala sa kakayahan nila, our city will soon be the home of champions,‚ÄĚ said Fernandez.
The athletes for the 2014 R1AA are now training with the support of the city.
DepEd Supervisor Edil Abalos said that they have commissioned the services of coaches from Manila who will be staying here for 3 to 5 days to train the city’s athletes.
¬†‚ÄúWe are doing this to improve the standings of Dagupan from the last R1AA,‚ÄĚ said Abalos. (CIO/01-16-2014)¬†By Joseph C. Bacani
